  • We have too much depth

I know this is never a problem but it seems that early on we have so many guys needing a spot and not enough room. At what point does having so much good talent in the AHL hurt us? Guys are going to keep working hard but if they know there is little chance to make the jump to the Sens could it hurt player development.

I'm thinking of guys like Da Costa and Petersson. And then there are still 3-4 guys close to being ready but we have a full line up as it stands.

I think it was really Lehner getting to Lehner 2 seasons ago when he saw all the guys he won the Calder Cup with get full time jobs while he had to stick around and hold down the fort. Then Murray goes out and got Bishop. I think there would have been a big problem last season if they didn't bring Lehner up.

That's why I liked the Ryan trade for us. We really do have a lot of depth, particularly at 2nd/3rd line forward, so while Silfverberg I think will end up a good player, we were able to turn it into Bobby Ryan.

I still think this is a great, relevant post. We had/have a lot of prospect depth. We were able to essentially upgrade Silfverberg to Ryan...it cost a 1st and Noesen. Of course we had a bad year and the first was a little higher than expected, but at the end of the day it doesn't really affect us. Noesen is an interesting prospect I'm excited to see.

With that being said, well done to Anaheim for getting great value for a player they were pretty openly trying to move.

This is why we really ought to make another trade to bring in a good NHL roster player this summer. I hate to simply hand Chiasson the second line RW spot without any competition - I suppose Stone or Lazar could make a push for it, but especially after this Spezza trade, we're loaded with good, but very few blue chip top level, prospects. A package involving one or two of Mark Stone, Alex Guptill, Shane Prince, Mike Hoffman, J.G. Pageau, plus maybe a defenseman and/or pick, should be able to land us a pretty solid player. *cough* Chris Stewart...

The analysis I did over in the other thread has me believing that this is the year for Stone. It wouldn't surprise me at all if, by the end of the season, he's clearly our RW2 behind Ryan.
