Not surprised by this. Toronto would have been in deep trouble if they did not sign him. When you look at comparables I don't think he is in that class but in a market like Toronto where he is the best player the contract fits.
Actually, CBC had a good graphic on people who have been top 10 in scoring and their recent contracts - he's in that ballpark. It would be nice if he backchecked once in a while, but he's probably good for 25+ goals in all of those 8 years.

Stats wise sure, but would you take Kessel over any of those players?
Kessel is the best player on Toronto but he would not be a player you build around. He does one thing, score goals. Hasn't even scored 40 goals yet.
I just don't think he is an 8 million dollar player.
why does everyone say that Kessel isn't a player they'd build a team around? He's definitely not the same guy the Leafs traded for 4 years ago.
I think his 2-way game has come a long way under Randy Carlyle. Sure I'd never use him in the same sentence as say Patrick Kane or even Corey Perry but he's certainly an elite winger. Most people just see him as a goal scorer but I think he's quite an underrated playmaker, last season especially. I'd be interested in seeing what he could do with a genuine first line center.
