Interesting. Lamoriello was a great GM back in the day and it was hard to see him ever managing anywhere except New Jersey. I can't say I've been impressed by him for a while now, though. He's struggled to adapt and left New Jersey in pretty bad shape.

Yup, I think I had him second or third in my top ten GMs list a couple years ago. But since then there hasn't been much to write home about, and looking back at his draft record the past ten years or so, there have been a lot of misses in the first round.

Actually, looking back further, there have always been a lot of first round misses throughout Lamiorello's reign in Jersey. Aside from few knockout homeruns early in his career - Shanahan (for whom they got Scott Stevens), Brodeur and Niedermayer, most of their top players come from later round picks........ but then I guess it doesn't really matter where you find the players as long as you find them...

Regardless, like John Muckler, he has struggled greatly since the start of the salary cap era.

With Lamiorello already 72 though, I wonder how much say Wunderkind Kyle Dubas will have as he is groomed for the role.

I'm a little hesitant to say he's overrated as it's a term that gets thrown around a little too much, and he's a GM that a lot of people respect.

I guess I'm trying to say he wasn't really challenged a lot during New Jersey's golden era. They had Brodeur, they had a strong core and they had a coaching system that worked. That's no knock against him ... in fact it's good for him that they brought those pieces in. But in a non-salary cap era, he literally just had to sit back for years while all this happened. When the salary cap era hit he struggled. One thing I found interesting is how many high end players left New Jersey (as in ... not traded, left). Scott Niedermayer, Zach Parise, Brian Rafalski, Ilya Kovalchuk ... even Brodeur at the end of his career.

I don't think this is a bad move. It's a short-term move while some Leafs management get groomed, as you said. Plus, you bring in a guy with the respect Lou commands and it will be a good thing.
