  • Isles acquire Vanek

Thomas Vanek is now a member of the New York Islanders.

The Islanders acquired the left wing from the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night in exchange for left wing Matt Moulson, New York's first-round pick in 2014 and a 2015 second-round pick.

The Islanders?! This feels like 2007 again. Suppose it depends on if they can re-sign him.

Islanders gave up a lot for someone who is UFA...I hope they can convince him to stay a while.

Pretty big trade. Good deal for both sides, obviously the Islanders need him to re-sign though.

Dallas is in Buffalo and after 2 periods of play, ...the score is 4-3 for the Stars but Moulson has 2 goals for the Sabres.

I have a feeling the Isles will have no trouble signing him after a full-season of playing on Tavares' wing.

I have a feeling the return for Vanek will be more than this. I don't expect Moulson to stay in Buffalo through the deadline.

POST-VANEK DEAL: SABRES RETAIN MONEY; VANEK OFFERED TO LEAFS

Some interesting details have emerged regarding Sunday's blockbuster trade between the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders involving forwards Thomas Vanek and Matt Moulson.

As reported on Tuesday by TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, Vanek's former team the Sabres will retain approximately $1.4 million - or roughly 20 per cent - of what's left of the $6.4 million he is still owed in the final year of his contract.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun added Tuesday that if the 2014 first-round draft pick acquired by Buffalo in the deal ends up being a Top 10 selection in June, the Islanders would have the option to defer the pick to the 2015 draft.

Another wrinkle in trade news from the weekend came up on Tuesday as TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported that Vanek was offered to the Toronto Maple Leafs three-to-four days ago, but there was no deal to be made.

According to Dreger, the return that general manager Darcy Regier received from the Islanders for Vanek was something that the Maple Leafs - or other clubs - weren't willing to pay.

Wow, those are some very interesting details. You know, the more I think about this trade, the more I think Buffalo made out like bandits. Moulson is a hell of a player in his own right, and adding two draft picks from the first two rounds while giving away a guy who is going to be UFA and extremely unlikely to re-sign makes it a huge win for the Sabres. If they retain Moulson after this year, it will look like an ingenious trade.

I think the Sabres would prefer that 2015 pick.
