  • Sharks lock up Burns for 8 years

Defenceman Brent Burns has agreed to an eight-year extension with the San Jose Sharks worth a reported $64-million US.

The 31-year-old all-star with the all-world beard was in the final year of five-year deal worth $25 million and would have been a free agent on July 1.

I think Sens fans have to be pretty happy with that precedent.

Unfortunately I don't think there will be a precedent for EK65's deal.

          - 401 points in 498 career games (including 252 points in 282 games since his last contract started)
          - 2 Norris Trophy's (and will likely have at least 3 by the time his contract is up)
          - Leads defensemen in points every single year
          - Top point producer on the Sens, as well as having the captaincy

He'll likely get the most lucrative deal in NHL history (well, at least in terms of cap hit). Everyone is worried about the Sens not being able to re-sign him but I'm not too worried. We've ponied up $7M+ for Bobby Ryan. $5M+ for Clarke MacArthur. $5M+ for Methot. The team knows Karlsson's importance on and off the ice. Perhaps he won't be happy with the team but there's nothing that suggests that to me, and it's still pretty far away.

And he's getting married. I doubt his fiancee wants to move to Michigan.

In my opinion Karlsson is better than Burns and more valuable to his team. I think Ottawa fans would be in an uproar if they don't resign him.

There's no reason why he wouldn't stay but Ottawa fans are like shelter dogs. They've been hurt so many times before.

See: Alfredsson, D; Chara, Z; Hasek, D. Also the Yashin contract holdout and the Heatley trade request, and the Bryan Berard incident, and Pavol Demitra, and Mikael Wikstrand.
