  • Report: Encarnacion signs 3 year deal with Cleveland

The Cleveland Indians swung for the free-agent fences and connected: Edwin Encarnacion is joining the AL champions. Capping a year in which they came within one victory of winning the World Series for the first time since 1948, the Indians agreed to terms with the veteran slugger on a $60 million, three-year contract Thursday night. The deal includes a club option for 2020 that, if exercised, would make it worth $80 million over four years.

Well that blows. Easily my favourite Blue Jay. Morales and Smoak are quite the downgrade at 1B and I feel the team will struggle. Wonder how popular the team will be if they go back to being average?

Apparently the agent played hard ball and this is the deal they ended up with. Toronto had put a better offer on the table and the agent asked for more, Jays walked away.....

Yeah. The Jays offered him a pretty good deal, I think 4 years $80M or something. His camp decided that there would be more of a market for him, and here we are.

Its disappointing for not only the player, but the Jays. It seems as if they settled for a notable downgrade, whereas if they had of waited, they probably could have brought back EE cheaper than they originally offered. Hindsight is 20/20, though.
