  • Chris Neil Headed to Free Agency

The Sens will not attend to re-sign Chris Neil:

Ottawa Senators have informed Chris Neil, 37, that he won’t be back next season and so he’ll be an unrestricted free agent as of July 1

It's a shame he's not retiring right now and ending his career in Ottawa. He probably won't be happy with his role anywhere.

His kind is definitely dying out in the league. It's too bad though.. I really didn't find he played all that badly when he did skate. Of course, he got such little ice time, and I suppose that must be because the coach - who certainly knows better than I do - didn't think he was fit to play the minutes. I'm struggling to think of a team who could use him. Arizona?

I think 31 teams could use Chris Neil, but here's the thing. I don't think any team could use Chris Neil in the role he wants.

At this point in his career, he's not the 82 season, 8-10 minutes per game guy he wants to be. No team will give him that. They may think he can fill that role, but by Game 41 he'll have likely been a healthy scratch.

He's an option guy now. He's a good guy to have around the team. He pushes harder than anybody else and will keep the depth players in check. He can survive out there when need be, and as shown in the playoffs, can come out of the press box to fill a role.

In my opinion, he's making a mistake. Is playing probably 35 extra games and making an extra $750,000 really worth not retiring a Senator?

Good point - but, can you imagine how difficult it must be for Neil, who's made a career getting past a lack of natural talent through sheer work ethic and physical strength, being told (and eventually realizing himself) he just can't keep up anymore? That's gotta be BRUTAL.
