Hawks acquire Labarbera

The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired goaltender Jason LaBarbera from the Edmonton Oilers for future considerations, the teams announced Saturday.

He's reporting to the AHL, so it just looks to be insurance for Rockford since their goalies are in the NHL.

Could Edmonton just be unloading salary? If so, then future consideration may be that the Oilers get a pick depending on where Chicago finishes the season...or they get a player down the road when the Hawks need to create cap space...I guess there could be many ways to consider future "trade talks" between the two teams..

How much is Labarbera worth, really?

Don't they usually just say so when it's a conditional pick? I seem to recall several trades where we heard about future considerations and then never heard anything again... Maybe it's just a nicer terminology to use when they literally give the player away, and a way to make it legal from a rules perspective.

Also, I think Labarbera is a very serviceable backup.

A gentleman's agreement of sorts perhaps? If it's like your last suggestion, then it's an obvious loophole which the league should get rid of, which is why I don't think that's the case.

Chicago will give Edmonton something when they determine Labarbera's full value to the club. It'll be a 6th or 7th. He's not that valuable.
