  • Steen extended 3 years

The St. Louis Blues on Wednesday signed forward Alexander Steen to a three-year contract extension worth $17.4 million.

He is in the final season of a four-year, $13.45 million contract and would have been an unrestricted free agent this summer.

    Re: Steen extended 3 years

I have to admit something about Alexander Steen. For some stupid reason, I only realized a few years ago that he actually wasn't his Father, Thomas Steen. I think the reason for this is that I stopped following hockey seriously for a few years towards the early 2000s, and I guess I somehow missed Thomas Steen's departure from the NHL, and Alexander Steen's draft. So once I got serious about hockey again, and only until a few years ago, every time I saw anything about Alexander Steen, I thought it was the same Steen I knew about from the 90s and just kind of thought "well, he's nothing to get excited about, he's bound to retire next season". Seriously! I would see him with the Leafs and think he looked like one of their best players, I would parse stats and think he looked like a good pick for hockey pools, but I would never draft him or really give a shit enough to even look more into him, because I thought he was really old and was just somehow magically productive.

    Yeah, I know.

Crazy thing is he would have gotten 6.5-7 mil from a crazy general manager on July 1. Good deal.

Hahahaha that's ridiculous man. I'm sure I've made similarly stupid mistakes though. Can't think of any quite that silly off the top of my head, but yeah.

And yeah, good deal for St. Louis. Not that Steen will likely keep up his torrid goal-scoring pace, but either way, he's a spectacular two-way forward and penalty-killer and with the team St. Louis has now, there's no reason to think 30 goals and 60 or 70 points a year will be unlikely.
