I think you're being a little too hopeful on the return we'd get for our players.

Ryan probably has really negative value. Injury prone and probably doesn't hit 30 points for the second year in a row. He has term, big money and a NMC I believe. I don't think there's a team out there that would take him without giving back a bad contract (like Gaborik for Phaneuf) or taking a nice asset.

Burrows/Dumont/Claesson probably don't have a lot of value at all.

Also Philly just got Mrazek from Detroit. I know Bobby would go there but nothing to suggest Philly want or need that kind of contract?

The biggest asset that Philly gave up was a conditional third and they got Mrazek on retained salary. Considering Mrazek is young, team-controlled, and still has untapped potential, I doubt Ottawa will ever be able to trade Andy or Condon. I think Andy has earned his keep and I would ride it out with him regardless. Condon they'll either have to buy out or bury in the minors like Hammond. Best case they could package Condon in a salary dump trade. I agree with Brandon's comments above. Burrows would have to be bought out or waived. Dumont waived update: this just happened (maybe Tampa claims him and sends him to Syracuse where he was a big part of the Crunch (kinda like Dido going to Rockford)). Claesson I think is worth a second or third. He's better served in Ottawa as a sixth/seventh D in the meantime.

EDIT: Can we talk about the trade market for goalies? The last three times that teams gave up first round picks for goalies were: Raanta, Andersen, and Jones. And Raanta hardly counts cos the 'Yotes also got Stepan. It's wild to me that teams pay more for depth forwards than goalies.

        • Not sure if this article has been posted here before but sweet jesus:

Travis Yost of Hockeybuzz was hacked after a summer's worth of reporting on the finances of the Ottawa Senators. The paper trail left by those hackers raises big questions.

Highly vindicating for those of us wearing tinfoil hats around Melnyk.

Andy should retire a Senator even if he's backup by the end. Condon has been trash this year, no such loyalty to him. Question is, what's the goalie market like this year? That Mrazek trade makes me think, "not great".

Can we waive Burrows when he comes back from suspension? Seriously, Max McCormick is outplaying him. You guys know how much I hate McCormick but I'd rather him stay than getting Burrows back.

I think the goalie trade market reflects how little is known about goalies and form. In general it seems "harder" for a goalie to stay in top form over a long period of time. Yet another reason why Andy has been such a great guy to have all these years.

It's pretty interesting reading that article from 2013 - when news of an internal budget and the Sens being cash-strapped were just coming out. Melnyk and Daly both deny it, but it's pretty much confirmed multiple times by Melnyk five years later.

The only hope is that Melnyk sells. That's it. There's no chance the team can have long-term success with the team being managed the way it is and the extremely thin front office.

And why would Melnyk sell when he finally has Downtown being dangled right there in front of him? We can only hope that his finances are SO bad he simply cannot continue.

I think the only hopes are:

                        1) As you said, his finances become so bad that he is forced to sell.
                        2) The league forces him to sell.
                        3) He realizes that this is a great time, as he wouldn't have to invest in the arena yet has the groundwork for a new one.
                        4) He gets an offer he can't refuse.

We'll always have that one goal he scored, vs the Leafs, where his first shot was so bad that the puck rebounded from the back boards right in front of the net. That may have even been his ONLY goal here? Can't remember another one.

I was already aware Bobby Ryan was a bit of a tool. Used to follow him, would see his likes. Never meet your heroes, right? lol

                          • If you haven't, read this article about Melnyk. It's brutal. Here's some points:

                            - He was CEO of Biovail, where they were sued for $10M because of overstated earnings and hid losses to investors. Melnyk faced harsh punishments of $500k and being banned from executive roles in publicly-traded Canadian companies for five years.

                            - He's pretty much liquidated all of his assets, except the Sens

                            - He purchased half of the team with debt money, and has to constantly restructure and re-arrange the repayment process. According to an article by the Globe and Mail, Melnyk was upset how Scotiabank was handling his debt. This led him to tear up the arena naming contract and remove their presence completely from the arena. Bettman stepped in and fixed some things, as Scotiabank is the Canadian bank sponsor of the NHL.

                            - It also outlines the front office mess of the Sens - losing President's, CFO's, CMO's, scouting staff not being paid, lawsuits against the team, etc.
