It's too much money. Phaneuf is a good defenseman, but this is elite money.
It's no longer about the actual money more so than the % of the cap it takes up. The salary cap is going to hit 100M in the next few years apparently, so it's a matter of %. In a few years, Phaneuf's contract will be roughly 7% of the salary cap. Not bad.
Subban's gonna get at least 8.5 million though with this contract.

I hear that. However, cap low or cap high, Dion is being paid like an elite #1 defenseman. Unfortunately, he's not. He doesn't excel offensively or defensively. He makes good plays defensively, and he's good in his own net, but he's far from being elite in that regards. And this is happening because he gave up a large portion of his offensive game.
I think if Subban used this as a comparable with the cap going up, he could ask for $9.5M. Will he get that? Very doubtful, but he's a very good defenseman in both ends of the ice. He's elite offensively and very good defensively.
Yep, it was and is an awesome deal. And you're right; we gotta' hand it to Murray for building this team - on such a tight budget especially. Our worst contracts right now are Spezza's and Cowen's and then only because of how they're playing right now.

It's funny because up until about 2010 (might be a little off), I wasn't a huge fan of Bryan Murray as GM. He had made some bad moves, such as trading for rentals when we were a pretender and not being able to retain them and also giving out bad contracts. With the smaller cap, Fisher seemed like too much. Kelly seemed like too much. Our cap was a disaster with Heatley-Spezza-Alfie. Our team was kind of a mess, had a lot of veterans and were only an alright team. He did do some wonderful drafting, though. Karlsson, Wiercioch, Smith in 2008. Cowen, Lehner, Silfverberg in 2009.
Once we started rebuilding, he showed how smart he really is. Everybody was crucifying him for trading beloved Rundblad and a second for that bust Kyle Turris. Now how does it look? Rundblad still isn't in the NHL and Turris is on pace for 60 points playing an elite defensive game. He got us picks for veterans. Essentially, he turned Mike Fisher, a second round pick and a first round pick into an elite sniper - Bobby Ryan. The Heatley deal gave us more depth options with his cap hit gone, and we went from a one line team to rolling three lines now.
