  • Kane extended

Evander Kane signed a seven-year contract with the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.

    Financial terms were not released.

According to @CapFriendly on twitter, his AAV is 7M

Wow. When San Jose acquired Kane, I argued he would be a good fit, and it seems he was. However, I'm surprised to see them make such a commitment to him. I don't think I would be happy if Ottawa had acquired Kane in free agency for that term and value.

That tweet you posted really kinda sums it up actually. I don't know that I'd want any one of those contracts on my team.

      Especially Ryan

        This is a bad contract.

Completwly ignoring his off-ice issues, he’s not a $49M player. He’s never scored 60 points and only topped 50 twice. He brings a bit of edge and a mean streak, but meh.

San Jose probably regrets this contract within the first three seasons.

Bobby Ryan had 23 goals and 48 total points in 2013-14, the season before he signed his contract. In the prior years, he had

          12-13 11G 30PTS (46 games)
          11-12 31G 57PTS
          10-11 34G 71PTS

Evander Kane had 29 goals and 54 total points in 2017-18. In the prior years, he had

          16-17 28G 43PTS
          15-16 20G 35PTS
          14-15 10G 22PTS (37 games)

I guess you could say Kane is trending the right way but that's a HUGE gamble IMO?

Good point Matt. It makes more sense than Ryan’s deal, but still I think a gamble that’s unlikely to pay off.

Ryan was always signed too much, but it was important to keep him. San Jose also loses a first round pick by re-signing Kane.

Agreed. At the time, had we traded for Ryan and then let him walk it would have been disastrous.
