    JUST IN: The #Avalanche announced they have signed newly-acquired goaltender Philipp Grubauer to a three-year, $10 million contract

    The Colorado Avalanche have signed newly acquired goalie Philipp Grubauer to a three-year deal worth $10 million. The Avalanche obtained Grubauer alongside defenceman Brooks Orpik in exchange for a second round pick on Friday. Orpik was waived earlier on Saturday for the purposes of a buyout.

    Grubauer is a very promising goalie. He took over from Holtby at times and even started the playoffs. I’m a little surprised at seeing Washington trade him, but after Holtby’s playoffs and Washington needing to sign Carlson, I guess it was in the cards.

    Avs aquire Grubauer and Orpik

    The Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals cleared some space to try to re-sign a handful of key free agents by trading veteran defenceman Brooks Orpik and backup goaltender Philipp Grubauer to the Colorado Avalanche for the 47th pick in the NHL draft .

    Colorado GM Joe Sakic was willing to take Orpik in the trade to keep the acquisition cost down and plans to try to trade him or buy him out. He felt it was worth it for the Avalanche to get Grubauer.

    The Washington Capitals traded veteran defenceman Brooks Orpik and backup goaltender Philipp Grubauer to the Colorado Avalanche for the 47th pick in the NHL draft Friday, a move that clears salary-cap space for the Stanley Cup champions to re-sign key pending free agents.
