  • Coach Controversies

First we had the story about Mike Babcock asking Mitch Marner to, as a rookie, tell him who he thought were the hardest and least hardest working guys on the team. Babcock then exposed Marner’s list to the rest of the team.

Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner talked to TSN Monday about the report that then-head coach Mike Babcock asked him during his rookie year to rank his teammates from hardest to least hardest working - and then shared his opinions with the players.

Now we have Akim Aliu saying that coach Bill Peters used the “N-word” around him, when he played for the Rockford IceHogs.

I mean, the Babcock one is stupid but not on the same level as the accusations made against Peters.

Yeah I was about to say the same thing. Calling the Babcock incident abuse is a stretch. The Bill Peter's thing is fucked up.

The Babcock thing is so strange... like its hard to even imagine its so strange, if I were a player and my coach had asked me to do this. I'd tell him to do it himself. You can clearly see who works hard and who doesn't. I also never got paid to play hockey. It's so strange to imagine though.

The Peters thing... if true, he's just an asshole then.

Josh, the article says "the Calgary Flames head coach, when Peters coached Aliu with the Chicago Blackhawks AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs."

Also I hope this isn't the end of the dudes career. I think social justice is fucking dumb and people should not act a certain way out of fear of the repercussions. They should act a certain way out of respect.

Like, I'm struggling with the Babcock one just in terms of common sense and working in a team. Clearly it didn't work, but what was he trying to do in the first place? If he wanted to size up the rookie, that's a private conversation. If he wanted to blast his team or an individual player, he should do that directly and not hide behind Marner's opinion?

This essentially amounts to your manager asking you to dish on all of your co-workers, then holding a meeting with your co-workers and telling them all the things you've complained about.

Remember Akim Aliu was the one who exposed hazing practices in junior back in 2005. I read a lot about Aliu and that situation, and there is no doubt in my mind that he was telling the truth then and is now.

Good catch. Peters wasn't Calgary's coach when Aliu played there. Edited.

If true though, Peters is more than just an asshole. That's full-on racism, especially if he was instrumental in demoting the kid.

I had forgotten about that. Here's a good article summing it - and more - up:

What I am saying is the player should have said something years ago when it happened. Now that everyone has their pitch forks ready every time someone tweets something. I hate this social justice bullshit.

Shutdown Disney. They did some horrible racist shit years ago.

Anyways I'm done. I wont post on anything political.

You're entitled to your opinion and I encourage controversial and unpopular opinions. This forum would suck if it was just an echo chamber. The best discussions are born from disagreements.

I think I understand the point you're getting at. I also have the benefit of knowing you in real life and knowing that you loathe racism. Cancel culture, like the Don Cherry thing, is getting out of hand. Make your decisions with integrity and with due process, not just following trends online. Sportsnet knew all about Don Cherry before hiring him. The Flames probably knew all about Peters' past as well.

In this case, the Flames are badly underperforming anyways. They needed an out. And I think their investigation probably went something like this:

"Hey Bill. So did you really say that shit? We need to know the truth."

                          "Yeah, it's true, I did."

                          "K bye."
