Going into the season, the comparables would have had him around 4.25 long term, and at that price it would have been worth locking him up and by time we're good he could slot in properly as a third line center at a not unreasonable price.
With the year he's having, it tips the balance - he's now too expensive for it to make sense to sign him, and his trade value is as high as it will get.
Tierney's value is down, and he's gonna be RFA, so it would make the most sense to sign him now. I expect it'll be short term. No more than two years. Makes sense for us because we'll need a capable top six center while the kids are developing and with Pageau gone, and we can always trade him later. Makes sense for him because he's not going to get a better opportunity to play an important role and showcase himself so that he can capitalize with a big UFA contract at 27 or 28.Comment

Pretty much everything Matches said.
He's too expensive to keep now playing this way. If we could somehow extract a mid-late 1st rounder from a competing team, I'd do that. Tierney for a couple more years along with all of the kids we have coming up in the centre position should be fine.Comment
