  • 2021 Ottawa Senators Season

Game 1 of the season underway vs the powerhouse Leafs. First game for 3rd overall pick Tim Stutzle, and it's his birthday!

Huh. Brady Tkachuk had the second-most hits in a season last year for a Senator (303), beating even Chris Neil's season high (288, 2006-07). Only Mark Borowiecki (364, 2016-17) has had more. Worth noting that despite last season being shortened, Tkachuk played 71 games while Borowiecki played 70 in 2016-17.

Nick Paul is having a great game. Skating well, making things happen, playing sound defensively..

Great game. Convincing win for the Sens. Hope they play this brand of hockey all season!

Bah. The one downside to being on West Coast time, Sens games start at 4pm. And I don't finish work until 6:30, just as the game ended today. Guess I'll be watching a lot of the Canucks this year.

Awesome to see the young guns producing today. three points for Tkachuk, a couple a piece for Batherson and Norris. Gonna be an exciting year for Sens fans. Hopefully it will be a relatively quick learning curve for Stützle.

Stutzle played well. He looked confident. I was most impressed with Nick Paul, who was flying out there and showing shades of Mark Stone's hockey IQ. That's right, Nick Paul..! Chabot looked poised as usual, I think he should be captain. Tkachuk is going to have a huge season though. Such a fun player to watch and have on your team.

I'm trying not to set too high of expectations for Stützle. Last season I said the ideal situation for him would be to spend maybe a couple months in AHL before being called up. Being drafted out of Europe we have the option to put him there, why not use it? It's always going to be an adjustment to North American ice, so trying to make that adjustment in the best league in the world is going to be a challenge.

In a normal season, he could have played the first half in AHL, learned the North American game at a high level, gone to World Juniors, and then joined the big club in January, and then he'd be more prepared for the hype. As things stand, with the World Juniors he had, the hype is ahead of what he's ready for.

But the great thing is, guys like Batherson and Norris are looking primed for big years - hopefully add Brown and Brännström soon - and that should take a lot of the pressure off Stützle.

What a great game by Ottawa last night. A lot of young players taking to the ice and a bunch of new veterans joining the team.
                • Nick Paul was super impressive, playing well with the puck under pressure and making smart decisions with and without the puck. Super impressed by his play.
                • Tim Stutzle played a good game, no real mistakes to speak of but was subdued compared to a few weeks ago.
                • Brady Tkachuk, what a fucking stud, can't believe this guy is still in his ELC
                • Chabot played a solid d game, only noticed great things a fellow d notices.
                • Watson fucking eh, will fight tonight with Simmonds, way to keep and hype that Ontario rivalry.
The rest played well, nothing really stood out. I expected and expect more from Dadonov, his play didn't look great and turned over the puck a few times.

To Ottawa, my favourite Ontario team, and to their fans. Have a wonderful season.

The Sens were down 3-1 after playing without urgency and getting caught for it. My impression is they were trying to stay calm and collected, not forcing anything, but that it ultimately led to them not having the hustle they needed. Stutzle made it 3-2 on a beauty one-timer for his first NHL goal, then the refs gave the Leafs a bogus powerplay with two and a half minutes left. Ottawa killed the penalty, but weren't able to tie the game. Nick Paul was one of Ottawa's best players again,.

I spent most of today's game trying to relearn numbers after 10 months, and learn all the new numbers. Batherson was the player I was most impressed with, besides the obvious Chabot and Tkachuk. Also liked Connor Brown, Erik Gudbranson and Tim Stützle. Matt Murray had to be good, and came up with some big saves.
