No way. Not Carlyle's fault. Look at your defense. Look at your goaltending. Carlyle is a hell of a coach.

For a Norris winning defenceman, Carlyle doesn't know too much about defence. When the team is allowing 35-40+ shots on goal a night, how do you expect to win games? Bernier and Reimer are the very least of the Leafs' worries. You can't even just blame the defencemen...the entire team as a whole doesn't understand the concept of defence...and that is Carlyle's problem. I'd imagine that if he still has a job going into next season that he's on a very short leash.

Goaltending the problem in Toronto? I hope that's sarcasm.

You can only allow your goalie to face 35+ shots a night and expect to win enough to make the playoffs. It's the system.

Maybe what Matches was getting it is that Carlyle isn't the goalie coach...

Oh, so the goalie coach creates strategies to prevent shots on goal?

It's the goalies job to stop the puck. Toronto allowed the most shots in an 82 game season ever. Why would that be on the goalie coach?

Think what Josh is saying that Matches might be saying is that Carlyle has nothing to do with the goalies bailing out the team and making it look better than it is.

                  Re: Shanahan new president

I think Toronto is in trouble going forward.

The goaltending was good for the majority of last season yet they still missed the playoffs. Bernier had a solid season but for a lot of it definitely played over his head. Remember how high Leaf fans were on Reimer last season...now they throw him under the bus. You look at Bernier...he too had a small sample size and Leaf fans are high on him again. Who's to say they won't end up throwing him under the bus next season?

The defense is obviously a huge problem. Phaneuf is not a #1 defenseman, IMO. Then you have a bunch of "meh" surrounding him with Franson, Gardiner, Rielly, etc. They're just not good enough.

The forwards seem to be more of a strong point, except I've noticed they bail out on plays a lot to try and pad their stats. I still don't believe a team will do overly well with Phil Kessel leading the charge, especially at $8M. He has a lot of talent, sure. But there seems to be a lot of negatives to go with it. First off, he's completely out of shape. Watching him say how Leaf fans deserve better was pretty humorous because, if he really felt that, he'd actually commit to working out and becoming a better player. It's been a problem since he was in Boston and it's clearly still a problem. You see him after every shift completely gassed, even if he doesn't do much on that shift. Not saying that he's a bad player, but I don't think you'll go far with him as your best player.
