Looks like their D heading into next year is:

    Emelin - Subban
    Markov - Gilbert
    Beaulieu/Tinordi - Weaver

Re: Gilberts sign 2 year deal

I'm expecting Montreal to take a step back this year...I'd be surprised to see them get into the Conference Finals again.

Markov is a year older, and was already declining. To be honest, I think Emelin got paid more than he should have. He's an alright defenseman. I can't see him anchoring a pairing like he'd be doing next to Gilbert. Weaver is a pretty good defenseman for the role he plays.

I'm not very high on either Tinordi or Beaulieu. Tinordi isn't as physical as you'd like him to be, and his hockey IQ isn't that great. His skating is average. With the league getting faster and more talented every year, I believe that defensive defenseman are becoming more of a rarity because a lot are becoming less and less successful. The defensemen I want out there are fast, intelligent defensemen. The same applies for Jared Cowen...I'm not completely sold on him being a phenomenal defenseman unless he can boost his offensive game.

Beaulieu screams headcase to me. Almost leaving his QMJHL team just because his father was let go, getting assault charges while being drunk with his father. I remember a play vividly from the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships. Canada was against Russia in the third period, in a do-or-die game. Beaulieu took a dumb tripping penalty, but instead of fighting to get the puck back, he threw his arms up in the air and lazily skated back to the defensive zone. His man was left loose and scored a goal, which turned out to be the winner in a 6-5 Russia win.
