  • Eller - 4 years /$14M

Forward Lars Eller and the Montreal Canadiens have agreed to terms on a four-year contract, the team announced Thursday. No financial details were released but Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette reported the total value to be $14 million.

The signing avoids a salary arbitration hearing scheduled for Friday.

Hmmm, seems it's 3 years/$14M, so considerably higher AAV of $4.67M

No way Eller got 4.67 million. That would be absurd. I'm hearing it's 4 years at 3.5.

This isn't a great deal from Montreal's POV. Eller's career high in points is 30, and he took a bunch of steps back this season with 26 points. I can't really see him living up to his potential at this point...I think he'll be a decent third line centre, though. Not a lot separates Eller from Zack Smith who got $1.87M on a four year deal at a similar age.

Eller's defensive play is awesome and he's not really given the chance to contribute offensively, and when he is, he does well (which he also proved in the playoffs).

He's also, possibly, going to be Plek's replacement as the top PK'er when/if Plek leaves.

                Still sounds like Zack Smith...

Because he's contributed so much offensively in the playoffs too, right?

Eller had a bad offensive season, but the tools are still there and just needs to put in situations where he can produce. He still had 30 points in 46 games in the lockout, and was a beast playoff performer this year. I'll take Eller at 3.5 over Smith any day.

Well to be fair, Ottawa would have had to MAKE the playoffs this year for us to compare that.

The thing with judging a player off of one playoffs is they're so short, they can easily go on a hot streak or cold streak. Eller has decent offensive potential but has shown little no nothing so far...certainly not enough to warrant $3.5M AAV.

I'll have to agree with my fellow Sens fans, though there's honestly no homerism in my assessment. Eller isn't a player who deserves that deal right now. However, I do think he still has upside left and could turn out to be a quality 2nd line C. But he definitely wasn't there last season.
