  • TSN & RDS to host 53 Sens games in 2014-2015 season

TSN and RDS, the official broadcasters of the Ottawa Senators, today announced their regional package of Senators games for the 2014-15 season. The announcement comes as part of Bell Media's comprehensive 12-year partnership with the Senators reached earlier this year.

Beginning this season, 53 regular season Senators games plus pre-season matchups will be offered on TSN5 – part of TSN's new expanded lineup of five national feeds branded TSN1, TSN2, TSN3, TSN4 and TSN5 that debut on Monday, August 25.

RDS's suite of channels – including RDS, RDS2 and RDSInfo – delivers French-language coverage of 54 Ottawa Senators regular season games plus one pre-season matchup.

The networks' regional Senators games will be available to TSN and RDS subscribers who live in the team's designated broadcast region – which includes Eastern Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada.

TSN subscribers with participating television service providers in the Sens' broadcast region will receive TSN5.

Gord Miller tweeted that he'd be doing Leafs and Sens games this season.

^ I heard Chris Cuthbert will be splitting games with Miller. I couldn't be more happy...my two favourite play-by-play announcers in the league.

Given Gord Miller also does NBC stuff and also that they'll basically be covering 2 teams with a group of commentators I imagine it will be fairly split.

I don't have an issue with either Miller or Cuthbert but I am sure gonna miss Dean Brown...

I honestly don't understand broadcasting issues. Didn't Rogers/Sportsnet win the rights to ALL NHL games? What's this about Bell Media/TSN? How does this affect the "in-market" idea of watching games on GameCenter Live? Will it ever be possible to buy GameCenter and watch Sens hockey without using a proxy?

Well, before, CIBC and TSN had the national rights. That's why we could watch a Vancouver/Calgary game on CBC in Ottawa, and an Edmonton/Columbus game on TSN on a Wednesday night. However, now Rogers 'won' the rights so they get to have nationally broadcast games, and TSN doesn't.

So basically, for every team, there's a bunch of games that will be nationally televised. Then the team can auction off the rest of the games to someone who will pay them the most money. That's why last year Sportsnet broadcast so many Sens games. But now, the local rights have been given to Bell/TSN. So the amount of games that was on Sportsnet before is now on TSN.

How does this affect GameCentre LIVE? Well, the same as it had before. Basically, if you're in Ottawa and you get the game on a non-Centre Ice television package, the game will be unavailable on Gamecentre. Of course this is open to glitches and mistakes, such as not getting a particular game that's on TV because they think you do get it or vice versa. So to answer your question, unless stuff changes, no you won't be able to.

Yeah, Dean Brown is a good play-by-play guy. But we also have games on CBC and Rogers channels, so I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Brown calling a Sens game.

No change on the GameCentre front which SUCKS. Basically TSN and Rogers just switched places with Rogers promising a lot more national games in general.

The way I THINK it works is that Rogers has the rights to any game they want. However, not even Rogers has the appetite to air all NHL games every night at the expense of other sports. So once Rogers declares what games they want, the rest can be sold to another bidder. In this case, knowing each of the Canadian teams has a good following in Canada, TSN took up the rest.

Just like Rogers already has, TSN is expanding to regional only feeds. I believe TSN5 is the one carrying the Sens. It will be blacked out in outside regions just like Sportsnet East was last year.

I'm not sure either, but remember there was a bidding for the Sens rights. TSN won with a pretty good deal. Who would they be bidding against, other than Rogers? I believe the Sens (and others) have a certain amount of games available for "local rights". That is what Bell and Rogers were bidding over on the Sens front.

But I don't understand exactly how it works, because the Leafs have 26 games on TSN and we used to only have 40 games on Rogers (now 50+ on TSN and I think 50+ on Rogers last year).
