  • Sens final cuts announced

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators (@Senators) announced today the 23-player roster that will begin the season with the club when Ottawa travels to Nashville to oppose the Predators in its season-opener on Thursday, Oct. 9, at Bridgestone Arena.

The roster is comprised of two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 14 forwards. One player currently resides on the injured reserve list.

    2014-15 Senators opening-night roster

Goaltenders: Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner; defencemen: Mark Borowiecki, Cody Ceci, Jared Cowen, Eric Gryba, Erik Karlsson, Marc Methot (injured reserve), Chris Phillips and Patrick Wiercioch; forwards: Alex Chiasson, Erik Condra, Colin Greening, Mike Hoffman, Curtis Lazar, David Legwand, Clarke MacArthur, Milan Michalek, Chris Neil, Bobby Ryan, Zack Smith, Mark Stone, Kyle Turris and Mika Zibanejad.

In order to reach the roster limit, the Senators assigned five players to their American Hockey League affiliate in Binghamton earlier today. Assigned to the B-Sens were forwards Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Matt Puempel and Buddy Robinson, along with defenceman Fredik Claesson and goaltender Scott Greenham. Forward David Dziurzynski and defencemen Alex Grant and Aaron Johnson were placed on waivers on Sunday and will be assigned to Binghamton should they clear later today.

Lazar, Hoffman, Stone make the team. No real surprises. However, they currently have too many forwards and will have to deal one if they want to keep those three players up. According to the Ottawa Sun, they're shopping a forward. I wouldn't be surprised if it's Greening and/or Condra.

Interesting...but I don't know if Greening or Condra have any trade value.

Agreed. They're gonna have to waive someone outright as I see no trades happening for Ottawa.

Condra might have a little value (5th-7th round pick to someone who needs a decent fourth liner), but I doubt Greening has any. In practice they've both been the extra forwards, too.

I wouldn't worry about waiving anyone right now. Work the 14-man rotation until you make a decision on Lazar. Remember, the 9 games don't necessarily have to come in the Sens first 9 games. If you're having doubts you can sit him a few in between and try out guys like Greening and Condra. Neil also might come out for a game here and there. If Condra/Greening don't outplay Lazar, keep him, and then you can worry about moving out a body. If you send him back, then you have a 13 man rotation of forwards, which isn't too unusual.

I think I'm confident enough to say Lazar will make the team after nine games. I don't think MacLean will sit Neil much, if at all. He referred to Greening as a bubble player.
