  • Kings defenseman Voynov suspended indefinitely

NEW YORK – Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov has been suspended indefinitely from all club activities pending a formal investigation by the National Hockey League of an arrest this morning on charges of domestic violence.

The suspension was imposed under Section 18-A.5 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which provides that, during the pendency of a criminal investigation, "The League may suspend the Player pending the League's formal review and disposition of the matter where the failure to suspend the Player during this period would create a substantial risk of material harm to the legitimate interests and/or reputation of the League."

"These developments are of great concern to our organization," the Kings said in a statement issued Monday. "We support the NHL's decision to suspend Slava Voynov indefinitely during this process, and we will continue to take appropriate action as the legal proceedings and the investigation by the NHL take their course."

Voynov, who will continue to be paid during the pendency of the investigation, was arrested for California Penal Code section 273.5, Domestic Violence.

Wow. I've got no tolerance for this kind of thing. Wasn't it something similar that happened with Varlamov last year? League is turning into the NFL :(

      Varlarmov's charges were dropped.

At least the NHL got right out in front of this one - first I heard was them suspending the player.

Yup. The NHL did well here, taking care of the matter before anyone had a chance to give the NHL itself negative PR.

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov was charged with a felony count of domestic violence on Thursday. The Los Angeles County District Attorney office charged Voynov with one count of corporal injury to a spouse with great bodily injury. Arraignment is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 in Department 4 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Torrance Branch.

The NHL suspended Voynov with pay immediately after his arrest on Oct. 20.

"We maintain our support of the NHL’s indefinite suspension of Slava Voynov," the Kings said in a statement Thursday. "As an organization we will continue to closely monitor the developments of the legal proceedings and work in partnership with the NHL to determine the proper course of action in the future."

Voynov was arrested at a hospital in Torrance, Calif., where his wife was being treated for injuries from the alleged incident. After an investigation, Voynov was taken into custody. He was released on a $50,000 bond later that day.

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League announced today that the existing terms of its suspension of Los Angeles Kings' Player Slava Voynov will be continued indefinitely.

However, in light of the uncertain and potentially extended period of time that the legal process may entail, the NHL and NHLPA have agreed to permit the Kings to replace Mr. Voynov’s Salary and Bonuses pursuant to the Bona Fide Long-Term Injury Exception under the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Kings fined $100,000 for violating terms of Voynov ban

Voynov skated with teammates Tuesday during a Club practice. Such activity is in direct contravention of the terms of the suspension levied Oct. 20, which permit Mr. Voynov to use club facilities and work with team personnel but prohibit his participation in any team-related functions or activities.
