Senators GM Bryan Murray goes for a drive with Daniel Alfredsson

A pair of old adversaries with uncertain futures took a ride to do some reacquainting on Monday. Former Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson and current general manager Bryan Murray went for a drive in Detroit, where the Red Wings and Senators will play in the evening.

"I ran into him today and he asked me what I was doing and he said, 'Let’s go for a drive.' It was nice," Murray told ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.

"Alfie and I have had a good relationship over the years, in spite of all that was said or written. It was good to see him and talk to him again today."

Alfredsson left the Senators after 17 seasons to join the Red Wings as a free agent in the summer of 2013.

Murray coached the Senators from 2005 to 2008 before moving into the front office as general manager. He said Alfredsson wanted to know how he was doing. Murray recently revealed he was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer.

"I feel good," Murray said. "The only thing that has bothered me at all is a little fatigue at times, a little more than normal. Obviously the energy level is not quite as high as it was. For the most part, I feel good and I continue to do what I do -- and hope to continue it for a while."

Alfredsson, meanwhile, is reportedly leaning toward retirement after being unable to participate in training camp this season.

If this proves anything, it's that time - and a drive around Detroit - heals all wounds.

    Re: Report: Alfie is done

I was always under the impression it stemmed from just being the captain during the peak of the rivalry. Unlike Sundin, Alfredsson was getting under Maple Leaf fans' skins through different ways (fake stick throw, hit from behind, etc).

But I've always gotten the vibe, at least since the rivalry cooled down post-lockout, that most mature (no internet commenter is ever mature :p) Leaf fans don't really *hate* Alfredsson. I think they just sort of boo him and hate on him for fun, which is cool. Sort of like how Heatley is now. When he comes back to Ottawa, I don't think many people still *hate* him. They just boo and hate on him for fun.

I dunno, that's just my impression. I think for Sundin he was just a quiet player, did his thing and left the ice. Personally, I couldn't really say I had any feelings for Sundin (negative or positive).

I need to know something...just what is Toronto's problem with Alfie? Is it really all that one hit on Tucker? Are they just super jealous? All I've heard and read in comments is people saying he was dirty, no class, not even that good of a player etc. etc...

I never felt this militantly angry at Mats Sundin...?

A sad day for hockey. What a beauty. Hopefully Karlsson learned some things from him about being a great captain.

Not a big fan of one day deals. I think it would suffice to make the announcement at/before a Sens-Wings game.

Was wondering what Mendes would have to say about this. Thanks for posting!

Elliotte Friedman wrote a great piece of Alfie.

    - Alfie told him in 2007, between the Sabres and Ducks, if the Sens won the Cup he'd retire. He's still not sure if Alfie was being serious, or testing his ability of trust for Elliotte.
    - Had a great relationship with Alfie; he agreed to do interviews with Elliotte despite not technically being made available during pretty upsetting times. After Cup loss/after Pomminville goal.
    - In 2010 Alfie was learning management assets for hope of a future job

Retiring just a year earlier would have been much better but meh.

Sucks to see him go out like this. He'll be remembered as Ottawa's best player ever...probably until Karlsson leads the team to success. He'll also likely be remembered as the best captain in Ottawa history for a long time.

Hopefully he signs a one day deal in Ottawa.

I'm grateful to all of the players who have made the Sens successful in the past. Some dudes just know how to burn the hell out of a bridge.
