No, the prices weren't too bad at all. I don't remember the prices for this year, as I bought the tickets maybe a year and a half ago? The ones in Ottawa I bought individually, so I couldn't really compare. But I've heard that this year it's relatively cheaper than it's been when the tournament was in Ottawa, or Saskatchewan, or even Buffalo.
Yeah, I bought the package for all the games in Saskatoon (which included the medal rounds). It cost about a grand. But it was the greatest time of my life. I took my holidays from work, and got drunk and watched three hockey games a day for two weeks. And yeah, the quality of hockey was incredible. Every NHL game I watch now days, there's at least one player I saw there, usually numerous. Just on Anaheim: Fowler, Vatanen, Bobkov, Palmieri, or St. Louis: Pietrangelo, Tarasenko, Allen, or Tampa Bay: Gudas, Tyler Johnson, or Washington; Carlson, Kuznetsov, Orlov, Johansson.
And just the experiences of being around all day. Waiting down the hall between games, meeting and getting autographs from Kadri, Eberle, Hall, Brayden Schenn, Cam Fowler. Being in the crowd that went nuts when Switzerland upset Russia, joining the occasional "Pierre McGuire sucks" chant (even though I actually like Pierre McGuire), meeting and chatting with Bob McKenzie and James Duthie, the Canada - USA shootout New Years Eve, after which everyone on the bus sang Oh Canada, the tension in the gold medal game with Canada down by two, the excitement when Canada tied it thanks to Jordan Eberle, and then the crushing defeat at John Carlson's goal.
I would highly, highly recommend anyone to go who has the chance.
Good read, thanks for posting. In Saskatoon, you could wait in the halls between games? I don't remember for sure, but in Ottawa, I think you had to leave the building and re-enter so they could scan your ticket
Well, not literally the halls, but the entrance to the locker room from the ice. Players were always getting interviewed there so that's where you'd go to talk to them afterward.
As for the leaving and re-scanning tickets thing, maybe you're supposed to, be we sure as hell never did.
So it's looking to me like the top six is shaping up like so:
I think the one mistake Canada made was cutting Michael Dal Colle. I think, with a guy like Gauthier, he can be left off the team with Lazar making the team. The thing about Lazar, is he's extremely valuable because of his flexibility on the ice. Ideally, you can match him up against the top line of the other team, and he'll come away with good results. Need a goal late? You throw him on at wing with McDavid. He kills penalties and plays the power play.
It sucks to see a true game breaker like Dal Colle cut. It's nice that the team wants Lazar to play an offensive role, but I don't think there's use for Gauthier with Lazar on the team.
I'd be surprised if Canada doesn't take Gold this year. Obviously you have that hope and expectation every year, but I think this year Canada reclaims Gold.
