As it turns out, we may never learn what Curtis Lazar looks like without a smile on his face. This one, you would think, will last a pretty long time.
Shedding five years of ignominy for your country will tend to do that to a guy, particularly one as optimistic as Lazar. The kid who came into Canada’s camp late, was named captain and provided much of the spark for the Canadian team was talking about filling his junior resume with a gold medal, which came when Canada defeated Russia 5-4 in yet another classic game between these two hockey superpowers.
It was pointed out that with a gold medal in the World Under-18 championship and a Memorial Cup with the Edmonton Oil Kings, his junior hockey trophy case is now full.
“Now I can start going after Lord Stanley,” Lazar said.
It was a good time. I liked the seats in Toronto more than I like them in Montreal, despite being around the same location. I ended up winning a Canada jersey at the New Years Eve game against the States so I was wearing that.
Sam Reinhart was definitely Canada's best player. The guy was a two-way machine. I thought our best defenseman over the tournament was Josh Morrissey, not Darnell Nurse, but whatever. Nurse was really good in the Gold medal game. Nick Paul was fantastic. He was consistently the best player on his line, and even got a promotion to the top line in the Gold medal game. How about that, eh? Two Sens prospects on the top line as Canada wins Gold again.
I met a lot of cool people. There were four other Sens fans sitting right near us in Toronto (they came from Ottawa as well). They said that in Toronto, when a Leafs prospect would score a goal, they'd chant Go Leafs Go. So they came up with an idea, if Russia beats Sweden and knocks out the Leafs prospect on their team, we'd start chanting Leafs suck. Well....we did  We got some dirty looks but nobody said anything.
We were hanging out with these two ladies who were quite attractive...then we found out it was Max Domi's sisters. We got their snapchat usernames...too bad I don't have snapchat  We met Nic Petan's parents after the semi-final which was cool because of the big game he had.
Ottawa still had, hands down, the best WJC. They hosted it better and the hockey was better. The atmosphere was much better in Ottawa than it was in Toronto or Montreal. Something I found surprising...no game in the entire tournament (Montreal or Toronto) sold out. You could still buy tickets, even for the Gold medal game. You could see empty seats. In Ottawa that definitely didn't happen (20,500 for every game). Montreal attendance was pretty low, but they were pretty loud. You'd never hear the place quiet...always a buzz somewhere. Toronto had more people but I found the atmosphere worse. A lot of the game you'd have people (not to generalize, but a lot were in the 18-30 age range) who were on their phones for a lot of the game. I've found with a lot of people nowadays, they'd rather be at the game to tell their friends and twitter followers they were there rather than watch the game itself.

Except for the attendance issues, it sounds like you had a blast!
I want to hit up the World Juniors in two years for sure. I agree that it sounded like Ottawa had the best atmosphere for the tournament. Hopefully they bring it back sometime in the future.
I saw your message from a couple days ago...yeah, I'm pretty sure the medal rounds are Montreal 2017. The exact same format except opposite - Toronto gets the Canada group in the preliminary rounds, while Montreal gets the other group and all the medal games.
I don't understand why they need to do it in two cities. Why not just do it in Montreal 2015 and Toronto 2017 or something like that? Actually, I guess I sort of see what they're doing. If you live in Toronto this year and you want to see some hockey before the medal rounds, you go see Switzerland and Germany. I guess it attracts more people..
