  • Tim Peel suspended for one game

Memo to NHL referees: Don’t have your picture taken holding a drink at a bar with a member of the media.

Doing so could result in a suspension, as Tim Peel realized last week when the 15-year official reportedly was barred for one game, a Jan. 30 contest between Pittsburgh and the hometown New Jersey Devils, after Yahoo Sports blogger Greg Wyshynski tweeted a photo of he and Peel holding a shot of tequila at a New York City bar the previous night.

I'm convinced he does this before every Senators game he officiates, they must not have photographic evidence.

Or maybe he should do that before a Sens game..he would probably enjoy it more. ;) Instead he is a miserable bastard when doing a game in Ottawa.

I find it strange that the NHL doesn't permit officials to speak to members of the media. I wonder what the details of that clause are.

Does anyone know more about the NHL's media-official policy, and/or whether or not the other major sport leagues have such a policy?

Further on in the CBC story, and my guess as to why he was suspended:

          http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck- ... 58557.html

In this article by Wysh, he states:

          - In a game between San Jose and Anaheim, he admits he made a bad diving call on Sami Vatanen, who copped a high stick. Then he suggests that he felt OK to make that call because of the NHLs overall stance to crack down on diving.

          - In the last game he officiated involving Washington, he admits that he gave Ovechkin a double minor with the score 4-0 in Washington's favour as "game management" and that he wouldn't have made the same call in a 1-1 game. Again, he implies the NHL encourages "game management".

I'm actually not surprised. Bettman seems like a control freak.

This guy sucks. He shouldn't even be officiating NHL games.

I find the entire situation strange. Did Tim Peel not know you weren't allowed to speak to the media? It seems like it would be a rule made clear to every official if it was a rule. If so, why did he agree/want to do the sit-down? Also, why would he take his picture with the Yahoo reporter with alcohol (seems like common sense not to).
