  • Chris Phillips: Senators GP Leader

Tonight Phillips will break a Senators record. He will play his 1,179th game, passing Alfredsson's 1,178.

Although most would agree his best years are behind him, Phillips has shown nothing but loyalty, hard-work and dedication to Ottawa and on the road to making the NHL. As a teenager, Phillips delayed the start of his WHL to be with his parents. His father, Garth, had diabetes and lost his eyesight. He died a couple of years ago. His mother, Carol, was restricted to a wheelchair. She was flown in as a surprise to Phillips and will be at the game tonight.

Daniel Alfredsson and Wade Redden will both be at the Canadian Tire Centre tonight to honour Phillips for this milestone. At the Senators Soiree last night, Phillips was given a standing ovation by the crowd for the milestone.

Kind of wish Alfie got to keep this distinction, but go Big Rig nonetheless! Last time he had a milestone game (his 1000th), I believe he scored in it. Weren't we at that game together Jasmine?

You could argue Alfie would have held the record for a long time (another 10+ years) if he stayed in Ottawa, right?

Not really. Alfredsson played 68 games after leaving Ottawa. If Phillips plays the remaining 32 this season, he'll only need 45 next season to have more games played than Alfie.

But who's to say things would have gone similarly in Detroit as they did in Ottawa? Remember, Alfie wanted a two year deal with Ottawa. He thought he had a couple years left in him. I realize his health was going downhill but he always seemed to come out of injuries well in his time in Ottawa.
