It's definitely a little on the steep side. It's scary to think defensemen like Boychuk (nothing against him...) are making close to the elite defensemen such as Karlsson and Doughty now. And the deals were only signed a few years apart.

The Islanders are in a better position by overpaying, say, $1.5M to Boychuk than losing him in free agency. Plus, with the cap room saved by getting rid of him, you'd have to bring in a UFA defenseman which you'll have to overpay for anyways.
