    The New York Islanders have signed defenceman Johnny Boychuk to a seven-year, $42 million contract extension.

    Wow! $6M AAV. A bit steep, but the Isles are a serious team for the foreseeable future now.

      It's definitely a little on the steep side. It's scary to think defensemen like Boychuk (nothing against him...) are making close to the elite defensemen such as Karlsson and Doughty now. And the deals were only signed a few years apart.

        I like Boychuk but I really don't like the way the Isles are built.

        Ottawa made out like bandits with the Methot deal by comparison.

          The Island needs to overpay to get these guys to stay and honestly, I'm all for it. Finally there's a respectable D corps that isn't made up entirely of prospects.

            The Islanders are in a better position by overpaying, say, $1.5M to Boychuk than losing him in free agency. Plus, with the cap room saved by getting rid of him, you'd have to bring in a UFA defenseman which you'll have to overpay for anyways.
