Do you think there's any chance Alfie comes to the Sens if we're on fire at the deadline and Detroit's in the basement?
I'm not sure I'd want him back. The idea sounds interesting, but he gave up on this team. He gave up on an 18 year legacy for money and he's a millionaire. The 'Alfie era' is over. Honestly, I'm looking forward to seeing how this team does and what the new era has in store for us.
Basically, I think we need to stay out of the Alfie era for good.

I'm not sore at Alfie at all. My anger is towards Melnyk. They forced his hand...
Nah, both of them can suck ballz.
Menlyk didn't need to pay Alfie any extra than they agreed too. They front loaded the contract because Alfie didn't think he was going to play the final year. He decided too so it is on him.
Melnyk didn't owe Alfie more money. He owed him fair market value as an UFA which was 4.5. Alfie got paid 18 million over 3 seasons which was above market value because he was going to retire at the end and he helped the team out(thank you) by adding the extra year to bring the cap down.
Alfie asking for 7 for 1 year or 12 for 2 was ridiculous.
In the end Melnyk looks cheap and Alfie looks greedy. Detroit came in in the middle and won.
I still love Alfie. His most recent decision does not change what he did for this team up to this point. But, for me at least, his decision does mean he has played his last game in a Senators uniform. I wouldn't want to see him come back.
We all know he was being selfish, and after almost 20 years and with no current contract he had a right to be selfish. Just as we as fans have a right to respect that decision, or be disgusted by it, or something entirely in between.
Honestly, given that it probably forced the Ryan trade to happen, I think the Senators are better off this year without him.
I wouldn't mind Murray going after a guy like Hemsky or Vanek at the deadline. It would depend on a lot of things of course. How serious a contender we look like by then will be a major factor. Also how good those players are doing will affect the return we'd have to give, and their team's success will affect their availability. Vanek would cost a bit more, maybe quite a bit more, but just imagine him on the left wing with Spez and Ryan.
I think Melnyk would have little issue with coughing up the last million or so remaining that will be left on one of those guys' contracts come March, provided that the team is in a good position to make some noise in the playoffs.

How about a powerplay with these 3 on it, and then Karlsson on the point?! Potential magic.
